The presidency has refuted claims that President Muhammadu Buhari and those close to him are plotting to install an interim administration through destabilizing the political system.

When people rush to get currency as a result of the Central Bank’s naira redesign program, there have been violent protests in numerous Nigerian cities. In many states across Nigeria, there is a shortage of petrol in addition to cash.

In a statement released on Friday by presidential spokeswoman Garba Shehu, the presidency claimed individuals circulating the rumor of an interim administration were just sowing fear.

Let’s clarify unequivocally, explicitly, and forcefully that the idea that President Muhammadu Buhari is pursuing an interim administration or, worse than, the abridgement of democracy is untrue.

Nasir El-Rufai, the governor of Kaduna, is one of those who brought up the rumor of an interim administration.

According to sources, Mr. El-Rufai claimed that some people close to the president are plotting to spread chaos in order to make way for an interim administration led by a retired general. Additionally, Mr. El-Rufai claimed that those pushing such an agenda opposed Bola Tinubu, the APC’s presidential candidate, in his bid for the office.

However, Mr. Shehu cleared President Buhari of any such scheme in his statement.

“The talk of interim government and truncation of democracy is way off the mark. Those who peddle it stand to gain nothing- nothing at all -but the creation of panic & the incitement of the public against the federal government.

It is another dangerous dimension by people who are afraid that they may lose their elections,” he said.
