Extortion was captured on camera in an attempt to acquire permanent voter cards, in Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, according to a statement from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) (PVCs).

Rex Achumie, the director of voter education and publicity at INEC’s Enugu State branch, revealed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Enugu.

In the video, a woman was seen demanding N1,000 from each registrant who wanted to pick up their PVCs.

She claimed in the video that the N1,000 would pay for her transportation costs and other stressors associated with delivering the cards to a neighborhood primary school in the local government region.

The woman in question, according to Mr. Achumie, is not an INEC employee or ad hoc member of staff.

None of the individuals in the video, in his opinion, work for INEC.

“INEC wants to unravel how the cards got into the hands of the unscrupulous woman in the first place.

“We are looking at getting the Electoral Officer in charge of the area to liaise with his staff to know who actually gave the woman the cards,” he said.

By Tuesday, Mr. Achumie promised, INEC would have a deeper understanding of the entire incident.
